The Most Neglected Element of PI Planning

In my professional experience thus far, I’d have to say the most neglected element of PI Planning is the Management Review. The goal of the Management Review is to determine what support is needed so the team can create a set of actionable objectives in the PI Planning, and deliver value to the business and its customers.

Why Is The Management Review Important In PI Planning?

The Management Review is an integral check-point mark during the PI Planning phase as it also provides stakeholders and facilitators of the event an opportunity to provide informed input to teams within the Agile Release Train.

The Management Review thus strives to answer:

🚀 Are we doing the right work?

🚀 Is the work being done correctly?

🚀 Can risk(s) be reduced?

So Why Is It Neglected?

Although the Management Review is an essential and valuable process, it is sadly often neglected. Where many teams go wrong here is that instead of addressing present tasks and issues, management  often adds additional work on top of what teams have committed to. The result of this is that they may fail to address issues such as risk and opportunities for innovation.

My advice to teams is therefore to follow the Management Review and integrate it into your PI Planning and team management.

The benefits of this are:

🚀 Greater collaboration and transparency.

🚀 Concise and clear objectives.

🚀 Respect for leadership.

🚀 Improved product quality.

🚀 Increased productivity.
