How Does SAFe Handle Change Management?

In the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), Agile Leaders must be a catalyst for change within the organisation and ensure that they are recruiting and supporting team members as well as align with the company’s vision so that the business and team can get the most product value in the end. When I think of Change Management, the first word that comes to mind is ‘transformation.’ This is based on the principles of Agile Ways of working where we are continually welcoming change, innovation and transformation in what we do and what we develop.

So, What Exactly Does Change Management Entail?

In the Agile approach, change is frequent and even though these changes usually only influence a small degree of change to the overall business, there is still a need to be able to manage multiple levels of change. And since the frequency of change is increased in Agile ways of working, traditional change management needs to speed up, so instead of committing to one  mj;lbpuvbj. huge task, SAFe splits it up into mini increments of change.

The Key Elements of the Change Process Are:

🚀 Scope.

🚀 Stakeholder Analysis.

🚀 Change Message.

🚀 Change Plan.

🚀 Training/Coaching

🚀 Readiness Assessment.

In an Agile environment, it is important to simplify and automate these activities (elements) as much as possible so that the process can be fast and efficient. Furthermore it is important to make these elements known and comprehensible among all team(s) involved.

We can runthrough the following checklist to make sure we are on tack and are aligned on what needs to take place:

  • Do we need to change inputs to any of our processes (system data, data format, time availability, etc.)?
  • Do we need to change our operational processes (process steps, work automation, quality reviews, signs off, etc.)?
  • Do we need to change our maintenance processes (support contracts, timetables, updates, etc.)?
  • Do we need to change our security processes (system access, information,etc.).

We can also use the Scope of Change to identify what needs to change. For example, we could look at:

🚀 Roles, responsibilities and lines of authority.

🚀 Activities in process.

🚀 Process documentation.

🚀 Frequency and time that tasks are carried out.

🚀 Equipment needed for task completion.

But of course, like with anything there is a cost to that change and so when deciding what change needs to happen, we need to make an informed decision based on input from our investors, stakeholders and business owners. This is important because they need to know what is happening and what the potential impact of that change will be.

In some cases we may find that these interested parties may decline our proposal for change or request that it happens in the next Iteration or PI. Nonetheless collaboration with these members is imperative for our business and it ensures transparency across all fronts.
