When comparing SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) to traditional Agile frameworks, it is important to understand the similarities and differences between the two approaches. SAFe for example is one of the most trusted frameworks when working in larger teams and organisations, whereas traditional Agile is most useful in smaller teams and organisations. Whichever route you decide to follow, it is important to look at the key differences and similarities, and measure it against your particular context

Let’s have a closer look.

What Are The Similarities of SAFe and Traditional Agile?

They both:

🚀 Follow the Agile manifesto and principles.

🚀 Aim to deliver high-quality products in an iterative and incremental manner.

🚀 Promote self-organising teams and a collaborative culture.

🚀 Focus on delivering value to the customer.

🚀 Emphasise continuous improvement and customer feedback.

The Differences of SAFe and Traditional Agile:

🚀 SAFe is designed for large enterprises that require coordination and alignment across multiple teams whereas traditional Agile is typically used for smaller teams.

🚀 SAFe provides a structured framework for scaling Agile practices, whereas traditional Agile leaves it up to teams to customise their methodology to meet their needs.

🚀 SAFe includes a formal, multi-level structure for tracking progress and assuring alignment across whereas traditional Agile relies on the Agile Manifesto and principles to inform decision making.

🚀 SAFe includes several additional practices, such as Backlog Refinement, PI Objectives, and Solution Intent, that are not a part of traditional Agile.

What is Better?

At the end of the day, the decision to use SAFe or traditional Agile comes down to your organisation’s needs, context, and maturity level. While SAFe may be the right choice for large organisations looking for a structured and comprehensive framework, traditional Agile may be suitable for smaller teams or those that require more flexibility and autonomy. Regardless of which approach you choose, it’s essential to continuously evaluate and improve your Agile practices to ensure successful delivery of value to your customers at all times.
