What is the difference between SAFe and Scrum?

Scrum is an agile framework designed to work at the team level, which consists of between 6 and 9 people at most.

It is a cross-functional team that coordinate their own work and prioritize the continuous delivery of valuable work for customers, end-users, and product stakeholders.

They work on a short delivery cycle, known as a sprint, and aim to deliver a working product or feature within a 4-week period.

It is compact, effective, and predominantly autonomous.

SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) is designed to align several agile teams and coordinate their work and synchronise the delivery of their work to create and capture value for customers.

SAFe is also designed to align organizational objectives with customer objectives and align agile operations to ensure that teams of teams effectively create and capture value for both customers as well as the organization.

Scaling Agile

SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) is a scaling framework for agile and is popular with large organizations who have identified the value of agile and want to scale that approach across teams of agile teams.

When you have multiple agile teams, working across multiple departments, and sometimes even multiple geographies, you need a framework that empowers you to coordinate that work, and align those efforts, without losing the simplicity and power of an agile approach to product development.

Scaling Scrum

Scrum has proven to be one of the most effective product development frameworks and has been tested through multiple applications, in multiple industries, in multiple countries around the world.

One of the primary challenges for organizations is scaling scrum across multiple teams, and in different departments.

For example, an organization that creates autonomous cars will need agile teams working on the hardware, the software, and the firmware.

Because those elements are integrated and interconnected, you will need to coordinate those scrum teams across multiple departments and ensure that at the end of each development cycle, you have a working product or feature to ship to the customer.

SAFe is one of the most effective scaling frameworks to ensure that those teams of teams, in different departments, can coordinate and synchronise their work in a way that provides customers with a valuable, working feature at the end of each program increment cycle.

Alignment of purpose

If we don’t create economic value for the organization, we don’t have a business regardless of how many customers may want our products and services. At the same time, we may have a great business but if we don’t create and capture value for customers, our business will fail.

SAFe is the perfect agile framework for ensuring that our organizational strategy is aligned with a customer purpose.

It empowers teams to coordinate and synchronise their efforts to create customer value whilst capturing economic and operational value for the organization. It has become one of the most adopted agile frameworks, roughly 37% of market value, because it consistently and effectively achieves these objectives.

As with scrum, each team will have their own unique purpose and SAFe helps align that team purpose with the purpose of a larger team of agile teams and the organizational purpose.

So, that is the primary difference between SAFe and Scrum.
