When does an organization reach the tipping point and what does that mean?

There are a few tipping points, in the context of SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework).

  • Making the decision to adopt SAFe
  • Becoming more effective
  • Responding to change

Making the decision to adopt SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework)

Change is hard, and it’s even harder when you are looking at organizational change.

So, step one is understanding why the organization want to adopt Agile, and SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) as the agile framework to facilitate that change.

We know the organization is successful because they have already achieved success in the market and have won customers through the delivery of a great product or service. It is now developing an understanding of why they want to shift from projects to products.

  • What are the organizational objectives that matter?
  • What are the customer objectives that matter?
  • How do the organization want to improve through the adoption of SAFe?

And so forth.

Usually, the organization have reached a tipping point when their appetite for change exceeds the desire to operate as they traditionally have.

That may be threats from competitor disruption or it may be a desire to achieve competitive advantage and grow opportunities in a current or new market.

Becoming more effective.

Sometimes, an organization reaches a tipping point when they identify that a lot of products and features are being created, yet those additions don’t add value to customers or resonate in markets.

The shift occurs when we are more focused on being effective than we are in being efficient.

Simply delivering tons of new features, consistently, does not equate to customer satisfaction, customer retention, or customer acquisition. It may even create clutter and make it hard for customers to understand how your products or features create value for them.

So, a tipping point occurs when the organization identify the need for strong product development that aligns with customer and organizational objectives.

Responding to change.

A tipping point can occur when the organization recognize the need to improve ‘time to market’ or respond to disruption from emerging competitors.

It may be a slow, steady loss of customers due to competitors releasing more valuable features, more frequently and consistently, than our organization does, or it may be a significant loss of customer market share due to a start-up.

Either way, the organization realize that they need to improve innovation and they need to create faster feedback loops, with customers and product stakeholders, to ensure that they are building the most valuable thing, in the most valuable way, at the most valuable time.

Traditional project management tends to fall over when navigating complex environments, and so more organizations are turning to Agile to improve product development, create shorter and more effective feedback loops, and deliver valuable products and features to customers.

In my experience, these are the 3 most common tipping points for organization and the primary drivers for adopting Agile and SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) for product development.
