A question that often comes up when talking about Scaling Agile, is why do we need to scale the organisation in the first place? Well the easiest and most straightforward explanation for this is that there’s a market demand and they have identified that they have got the capacity to deal with scaling upwards. So what happens is that we have got individual teams that can deliver results, which is great but most of the problems and solutions that we are working on are growing in complexity and need a multiple disciplinary approach or multiple teams.
We can pretend that this problem doesn’t exist and that the solution is descaling but if you look at the market, and you look around, every framework and method has now got extensions, or built in frameworks that tackle the scaling problem. And why is the scaling problem there? It is there when we only have a single team but need multiple teams.
Another issue that has been identified in scaling surrounds mindset. Typically people who say we don’t need to scale only focus on the development side of things but forget that we need effective and efficient software development teams to carry out our scaling goals. So if you look at the organisation as a whole, you realise that the actual development is only part of the bigger package and probably the least of our worries. This is because once the solution has been developed, it has to be maintained and requires customer research, continual engagement and improvement. However if the organisation and the teams are not aligned with Agile ways of working, we will hit some constraints.
