What is SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework)?
SAFe stands for Scaled Agile Framework, and one of the more important elements is to understand that the F means framework. Meaning that it is something that you can adapt to your business context rather than a rigid, prescribed set of rules that must be obeyed in a specific order.
That adaptation requires skill, experience, and knowledge to configure correctly because if you simply adapt it without experience and knowledge you could create significant problems and fail to capture the value of the framework.
The scaled element refers to scaling agile within the business environment.
There are many organizations who have pockets of agility within the organization, but they don’t achieve the outcomes and business objectives they require.
I often find that I speak to a team leader, and they are incredibly proud of their team’s agility but when I later speak to an executive or CEO, they don’t see any benefits compared to traditional project management nor are they seeing evidence of true business agility within the organisation.
They have done the research, spoken to the consultants, and what was committed at the start of an agile adoption is not being achieved in any of the value streams.
- Costs are escalating rather than dropping.
- Time to market is extending rather than decreasing.
- Customer satisfaction figures are low or stagnant rather than climbing.
- Customer retention figures aren’t increasing.
- Customer churn isn’t decreasing.
- Customer acquisition is decreasing rather than increasing.
- Employee satisfaction isn’t on the increase.
And so forth.
So, that misalignment between the organizational strategy and the execution is what SAFe was designed to address. SAFe aligns organizational strategy and business objectives with customer demand and objectives.
SAFe aligns the strategic direction the organization wants to take with the delivery of their products and ensures that the agile teams and teams of teams are aligned with a common purpose.
