SAFe core value 4 – Program execution

Program execution is about identifying how well the team are achieving the business goals and objectives that were set at the start of the program.

Measurement is incredibly important in SAFe because it empowers us to understand why there is a gap between what we anticipated achieving and what we achieved. It empowers us to learn from that gap, identify opportunities for improvement, and action those improvements.

Program execution focuses on building an accountability cadence that keeps us accountable for what we are doing, how we are performing, and to take responsibility for those performances.

It forms part of the team’s commitment to continuous improvement.

If we frequently measure our performance against our goals, we can identify what is working versus what isn’t working and adapt what we are doing to ensure that we achieve our objectives more consistently, and more predictably.

If we aren’t consistently able to achieve our objectives, it becomes incredibly hard for the team and the organization to build credibility with customers and earn trust within and outside the organization.

That is why program execution is such a critical core value.

Evidence-based lobbying

This process of measurement and analysis also allows us to identify what systemic issues may be blocking progress and empowers us to have valuable conversations with leadership teams, supported by data and evidence, to lobby for changes and/or interventions that lead to progress.

The program execution focus also allows us to demonstrate how specific interventions have enabled the team to consistently achieve their objectives and builds credibility and trust with the people we have recruited to help us continuously improve.

Teams organized around value creation and delivery

Program execution also allows us to check, and recalibrate, if necessary, how we have organized ourselves around the creation and delivery of value.

In other words, are we aligned with customer and organizational objectives, and are we organized to deliver, consistently and frequently, against those customer and organizational objectives.

That, in a nutshell, is why program execution is a core SAFe value.
