The Biggest Mistake in PI Planning

What mistake many organisations make in PI Planning is that they start it without doing enough content preparation. In other words, they haven’t got alignment within their own organisation. So instead of focusing on what is the right thing to do for the customer, they rather focus their time on what the right thing is for the business.

So What Does Effective PI Planning Look Like?

PI Planning stands for Program Increment Planning and refers to events that are regularly scheduled throughout the year, and where multiple teams within the Agile Release Train (ART) meet to align on a shared vision, discuss features, plan a roadmap, and identify cross-team dependencies.

The essential tasks of PI Planning are therefore to:

🚀 Run 2 full day events for 8 – 12 weeks.

🚀 Give time to Project Managers to prioritise features for the increment beforehand.

🚀 Develop and validate story planning and estimations.

🚀 Algin all teams and their mission.

🚀 Allow full collaboration and transparency.

Customer Centricity is Key

As I have said previously, where many organisations go wrong in their PI Planning is that they fail to look at the needs of the customer and instead focus too much energy on other areas of the business. It has been well evidenced that when you have Customer Centricity in your organisation and Agile teams, it’s more likely to have high-quality and competitive products, as well as smoother time-to-market. Because, what is actually the point of developing a product but it completely ignores the needs of the customer? I doubt it’d be very successful.

So in summary, what you want to do is look at both the organisation’s needs and capabilities, and the customers’ needs simultaneously.
