SAFe core value: Built-in quality

Built-in quality is a core SAFe value to ensure that we don’t first build products or features, and then inspect them for quality control standards at the end of the process.

As Deming so eloquently stated, ‘you can’t inspect quality into a product, you need to build quality into the product from the start’.

In SAFe, the idea is to build quality in from day one of product development.

Yes, the product will improve over time, and continuous improvement is an important element of agile, but we need to be focused on creating the most valuable product or feature, from the start.

  • What are the quality checks that we need to have in place?
  • Who are the people with the best understanding of what good quality looks like?
  • How can we collaborate with those people to ensure we are aligned with built-in quality?
  • How will we know if we have dipped below quality standards?
  • What will we do if we dip below quality standards? How will we resolve that?

And so forth.

Once we have a clear understanding of what great quality control protocols look and feel like, we can design a strategy from the onset of product development that aligns our efforts with built-in quality as a standard operating practice.

Creating and using continuous feedback cycles helps ensure that we are reinforcing that commitment to quality and inviting customers and stakeholders to share their product reviews and feedback early and frequently.

So, we are continuously inspecting, continuously learning, and continuously adapting to ensure that we are creating the most valuable product or solving the most compelling problems to a high-quality standard.
