What is the solution demo and why does it matter?
One of the primary agile principles is the ability to measure progress through working software.
That is, are we delivering a working piece of software to a customer, in alignment with the problems or needs that are most valuable to that customer, at the end of each sprint.
The concept behind the solution demo is that we have a working solution that we can demonstrate to the customer, and use that as a measure of success or progress, rather than an arbitrary measure of cost or time to market.
It is the customer perspective that informs whether we are doing a great job or not.
Building stakeholder confidence through solution demos.
In the solution demo, stakeholders are present with customers to observe what we intended to build, what was built, and what impediments blocked progress. Having them in the room builds confidence in the team’s ability to deliver value consistently and frequently.
It also allows stakeholders to provide feedback on what is being delivered, and inform what the team should attempt next.
Stakeholders can also make observations and draw conclusions about what interventions they can make to remove impediments or improve flow. Sometimes they have enough klout within the organization to change policies or acquire resources that the team cannot.
Having them onboard empowers the team to continuously improve and ensure that we have strong allies, within the organization, that can help us achieve our goals and objectives more consistently.
Bringing everything together.
Sometimes, you have interconnected and integrated elements of a product. Something like an autonomous car is a great example. You have hardware, software, and firmware, and they all need to integrate into a complete solution for a client.
The solution demo brings all these teams together and provides an understanding of the challenges each team face, the wins that they experienced, and what potentially stands in the way of future success.
So, the solution demo verifies that we have an integrated solution being developed in each sprint, and that teams are working together effectively to deliver continuous value to clients.
