What is the difference between leading SAFe and implementing SAFe courses?

The Implementing SAFe course starts with the first 2 days of the Leading SAFe course.

The Implementing SAFe course is very much a train the trainer course for Leading SAFe, so it focuses on teaching consultants and coaches how to effectively teach executives, change agents, and SAFe consultants how to lead SAFe and why it’s one of the most powerful, popular agile frameworks in the world.

In essence, what is the problem that SAFe solves and how does it do so effectively.

Leading SAFe course.

Leading SAFe is a 2-day course and it is the best introduction to Scaled Agile Framework or SAFe.

The Leading SAFe course helps attendees understand:

  • What problems we are trying to solve through the implementation of SAFe.
  • Why do the organization need to change?
  • What are the primary drivers of change within organizations.

The course also helps people to understand that 21st Century organizations are software-driven organizations, regardless of the industry they compete in. From mobile phone manufacturers to motor vehicle manufacturers, it all requires software to thrive.

SAFe is the agile framework that enables organizations to continuously deliver value to customers in the form of products and features that power their customer experience.

Organizations approach SAFe because they have a successful business, but they understand that they need to become more effective, adaptive, and responsive. They need to develop the capability to rapidly respond to customer opportunities or disruption from competitors and markets.

Their primary question to us is ‘how do we do that?’ and the Leading SAFe course provides the answer to that question. It demonstrates how organizations can become more agile.

SAFe is not about throwing everything that has ever worked for the organization out the window and starting from scratch, it’s about creating structure and providing a framework that empowers the organization to continuously deliver value to customers and respond to change rapidly.

Leading SAFe teaches organizations to use what they have, start where they are, and build SAFe practices and processes into the organization to become more agile and evolve with each program increment (PI).

  • How do we build structures alongside, or in parallel with, existing workflows.

So, that is how Leading SAFe helps organizations organize themselves differently to create and capture continuous value to customers and become more responsive and adaptive. It aligns teams of agile teams with a customer purpose.

Leading SAFe also explores how to organize teams of agile teams around strategic organizational goals and objectives. We need to create and capture value for the organization too.

  • How do we ensure that the work we are doing aligns with organizational strategy.
  • How do we ensure that the work we are doing creates value for the organization.
  • How do customer objectives align with strategic organizational objectives.

And so forth.

We are teaching the organization to create solutions that are feasible, viable, and serve a specific customer purpose whilst aligning with organizational strategic objectives.

In every element of a SAFe adoption, the foundation of its success is built on leadership. It is the leadership teams that design the systems of work and manage that system to produce the outcomes which the organization values most.

The results that are currently being achieved in the organization is a product of how effectively that system has been designed and how fit for purpose it is. If we want different outcomes, we need to change the design and management of that system.

Part of the redesign would be the creation of a network of agile teams that align with a customer need. SAFe refer to this as an Agile Release Train that aligns with a purpose-driven value stream.

This enables:

  • Better quality products and features.
  • Faster production of products and features.
  • Improved flow of work through the system.
  • Less burden and pressure on teams.
  • Alignment of teams of agile teams with organizational and customer value streams.

Leaders need to gain agile and SAFe knowledge to effectively lead by example. They also need to ensure that their behaviours and practices are aligned with agile values and principles for teams to buy into the concept of agile and the need for scaled agile framework adoption.

Actions and decisions need to align with the words that are being spoken.

The true test of leadership, and being consistent to agile values and principles, comes when things go wrong. That’s when people tend to revert to previous behaviours and practices. In SAFe, we need leadership teams to stay true and remain positive examples of agile leadership in times of adversity.

The Leading SAFe and Implementing SAFe courses teach leadership teams how to do this.
