What could you realistically achieve in the first 12 weeks of an agile consulting engagement?

We would start by identifying the purpose of change within the client environment. What is the problem they are trying to solve and what is preventing them from achieving that objective?

We would look to define the measures and metrics that would indicate whether we are successfully aligned with the purpose of the agile consulting engagement.

After this, we would co-select the best approach to achieve that purpose. We are proficient in a number of agile frameworks, and the first 12 weeks would allow us to select and implement the framework that is best suited to the environment, and best aligned with organizational and customer objectives.

Agile release trains don’t operate in vacuums, they are often integrated and interconnected elements of the organization, and so we need to identify what the impact of our implementation will be.

We identify metrics that would give us early indicators of how needles are moving in other departments based on the work that we do, and we would build out a dashboard of metrics to make that visible to the entire team and leadership/management teams who are a part of the initiative.

One of the hardest parts of an agile transformation is deciding where to start. In the first 12 weeks, we work with you to identify the most effective way to start, and agree on what that looks like. Yes, we want to think big but it’s the baby steps that matter most in the beginning.

From there, it’s a matter of implementation and getting the product development ball rolling.

Within 12 weeks we should see:

  • Changes in delivery rates.
  • Improvements in product quality.
  • Optimization of Work in Progress (WIP).
  • Decreases in overburdening of teams in the agile release train.

Mapping out the future.

As part of the process, we map out the customer journey and identify how value is created throughout the value stream.

A Value Stream Identification workshop, followed by a Value Stream Mapping Workshop, enables us to map out the entire value stream and identify everything from dependencies to bottlenecks in the system.

This allows us to identify which areas of the value stream are creating the most friction, why this is happening, and develop action steps to alleviate those bottlenecks and friction points.

The first 12 weeks enables us to identify significant problem areas and eliminate those problems to ensure increased effectiveness and flow of work throughout the customer journey.

So, in summary, within 12 weeks we can identify what has prevented you from achieving your product development and value delivery goals, and make a significant impact on reducing or even eliminating those elements to ensure continuous delivery of value to clients.
