What are the different basic entities in Large Solution SAFe?
One of the clarifying questions worth asking is, what do we mean by entities?
We can break it down into two elements:
- The Artefacts in SAFe
- The people, roles, and responsibilities in SAFe
People
In the solution context, we have a Solution Architect that designs and oversees the architecture for the solution. We also have the Solution Engineer who provides the Solution Architect with guidance with technical insight and expertise to help guide the solution train.
We also have solution management which deals with things like:
- What are we building?
- Why are we building it?
- For whom are we building it?
- How are we building it?
From there, we move to the Solution Train Engineer who is coordinating efforts across all the Agile Release Trains that work within the solution to build the product or solution for a customer.
They will play an active role in coaching the organization as well as the solution train to ensure that work is optimized and aligned with customer and organizational objectives. They also look for the systemic issues that impede the flow of value throughout the customer journey.
What is the Solution Context?
This refers to everything within the container of the solution. Everything that relates to a solution being created, produced, and delivered to a customer.
This would include design, models, tests, validation, and verification of the solution.
Think of this as an evolving and dynamic repository. At the start of the solution design, we don’t know all the variables and whilst we have an idea of where to start, we don’t have insight into the entire journey.
In the solution context, we think about evolving as we learn based on the data, evidence, and feedback we receive. So, we make a bold first step and then add to our solution context as we inspect and adapt.
As we move through the process, the unknown becomes known, and we discover a great deal of things that we didn’t know before. The repository includes information on:
- Why the solution is necessary and how it will impact the customer need.
- How the solution is currently designed to solve the customer problem.
- New information regarding the evolution of the solution architecture to adapt to changing requirements, disruption, or changes in the market.
- Verification and validation of how the solution meets customer needs.
- Everything that has been learned through the journey.
