Top Tip For PI Planning

Program Increment Planning (PI) refers to regularly scheduled events that are held throughout the year whereby multiple teams within the same Agile Release Train (ART) meet to ensure they are aligned in their vision, features, roadmap, and identify cross-team dependencies. Unfortunately many teams go wrong in the PI planning and it often falls apart for a number of facts. My top tip for PI Planning is therefore that teams should understand the big picture and stay steadfast on their overall goal.

But how to do this?

You can safeguard the PI Planning Process by:

🚀 Arranging Organisational Readiness. This involves making the necessary arrangements in advance so that each team member and Stakeholder can be present at the PI Planning event(s).

🚀 Performing your Readiness Content Context. This requires knowing and then managing the performance environment such as known and unknown factors.

🚀 Ensuring Facility Readiness. This can involve making sure that the environment in which the event(s) take place occurs in an environment that enables and supports effective PI Planning.

🚀 Appointing Experienced Facilitators. To ensure that PI Planning takes place professionally and achieves all of its objectives.

Why Do We Need To Do  PI Planning?

PI Planning is an important part of SAFe and must therefore be done regularly for at least 8 to 12 weeks.

The benefits of conducting PI Planning is that it:

🚀 Reduces reliance on other teams and organisations.

🚀 Mitigates risk factors.

🚀 Fine-tunes Agile approaches.

🚀 Supports the efficiency of the Agile Release Train.

🚀 Encourages goal alignment in the organisation.
