Which course is right for you?

Leading SAFe (SAFe Agilist) from Scaled Agile and Certified Scrum Master (CSM) from Scrum Alliance are two of the most popular agile courses offered globally. Both courses are designed to help individuals and organizations implement an agile framework, one being SAFe, and one being Scrum. Both are considered entry-level, but there are a lot of differences between them.

The Leading SAFe (SA) course is best if you are trying to understand the Scaled Agile Framework from a high level, while the Certified Scrum Master (CSM) course is for you if you’re looking to learn Scrum itself and want to know more about the role of the Scrum Master specifically. CSM introduces Scrum and SA introduces Scaled scrum (SAFe). So, it also depends on whether you’re interested in single/multi-team scrum or enterprise scrum.

Leading SAFe®

The Leading SAFe (SA) course is intended for individuals who will be responsible for implementing the SAFe framework at an enterprise level. This includes managers, executives, and other leaders who will be responsible for driving the adoption of SAFe across the organization. The course covers the core principles and practices of SAFe, as well as the roles, responsibilities, and skills needed to lead the implementation of SAFe in an organization. It offers a great overview of the SAFe framework.

Questions covered:

  • What is SAFe?
  • What is business agility and how does SAFe support it?
  • How does an organization get started with the Scaled Agile Framework®?

Certified Scrum Master®

Want to learn how to collaborate with a Scrum Team and Scrum Product Owner to produce twice the work in half the time? Becoming a Certified Scrum Master will teach you how to coach your team through rapid iteration cycles known as Sprints, and how to collaborate creatively toward producing the most valuable work, the right way, at the right time. You’ll also learn how to rapidly remove impediments to progress and drive innovation through continuous improvement.

Questions covered:

  • What is scrum and where did it come from?
  • What are the roles within scrum?
  • What are the meetings, ceremonies, and artifacts in scrum?

Summary

Overall, the Leading SAFe (SAFe Agilist) course is for you if you want to learn scrum at scale, particularly with the leading framework, Scaled Agile (SAFe). The CSM course is the better option if you want to learn Agile & Scrum from its core principles.

If you’re looking to understand SAFe as a framework – the best choice is the Leading SAFe Agilist (SA) course.

If you’re interested in Scrum and taking the role of Scrum Master – the Certified Scrum Master (CSM)course is for you.
