How Does SAFe Handle Quality Management?

Quality Management in the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) is an essential part of the SAFe methodology. This is because it ensures the delivery of certain capabilities and features that are based on an agreed set of criteria. Quality Management is implemented from the get-go as we do not inspect for quality after the product has been built but rather implement it continuously from the start.

In SAFe, there are four templates that Quality Management looks at:

Essential

This template occurs at the Program and Team level and is used to establish the Quality Management environment. It also contains the artefacts that are used to validate features and stories. It also provides teams structured iterations, artefacts, categories and a dashboard to support it.

Portfolio

The next template that is used at the Portfolio Level typically contains the program features and stories in a Portfolio of Programs. Like the Essential template, it provides teams with structured iterations, artefacts, categories and a dashboard to support it.

Large Solution

At the Large Solution Level, this template contains the artefacts that are used to validate cross-program capabilities and the program features and stories that are within the scope of the Portfolio of Programs.

Full

Lastly, at the Portfolio and Large Solution Level, the Full template contains the artefacts that validate cross-large solution portfolio epics, cross-program capabilities, as well as the program features and stories in the scope of the Portfolio of Programs.

These templates are used to create a Quality Management Project Area and therefore include the various roles, artefact templates, categories, and dashboard that is required for that particular configuration. For  example, after we have built the product we may bring it forward for someone to develop and test it further. In this case we may sit down and determine what configuration it falls under and utilise one of the four templates accordingly. So before we can even commence onto testing and formulate actionable objectives, we find out what exactly we want to do. We also want to make sure that what we are intending to do is aligned with the business goals and will aid us in moving in the right direction towards achieving optimal product quality.

The benefits of working in this way are that it:

🚀 Improves product quality through monitoring and measurement.

🚀 Reduces costs.

🚀 Encourages continuous evaluation and feedback looping.

🚀 Fosters collaboration, transparency, and inspection within teams.

🚀 Identifies and addresses problems early on.
