How Do You Get Started with SAFe?

Getting started with SAFe is a big step for someone to make and so the reason for change needs to be clear and strong enough. The desire to use SAFe should not be influenced by others or by force. It should be influenced by a strong reason and genuine desire for change across team members and the organisation as a whole.

Furthermore, the reason for wanting change must have real business results attached to it and actionable goals. So let’s say for example that we want to make changes, we will first and foremost look at the business results that we want to achieve and determine whether those desired results are really that important.

The next thing we would want to do when getting started with SAFe, is to list what we see as top priority from one to five. Change is difficult and gets tough, and so if the wrong items are listed as low-priority, they may be ignored and hidden under the radar. This is why we need to focus and intensify the needs of the organisation.

But how do we go about this?

We can go about this by:

🚀 Educating the Executive Team on what SAFe is about and why we need it.

🚀 Looking at problems need addressing.

🚀 Forming and guiding a coalition that help help change.

Of course this is all context sensitive and depends on the context you are selecting, all the way from where to start. Determining the direction you want to go can therefore be an interesting challenge as you want to be as ready as possible for any potential glitches along the way.  If there are any glitches or issues that go ignored, your business will inevitably go under and you are likely to suffer significant losses, which is why it is paramount that we make sure that we have the right people working in our team, and are aligned on the change the organisation is trying to achieve.

Once we are confident in our team, we can focus on maintaining momentum and continual improvement. To build on this and go deeper, I recommend that teams look at developing a Value Steam, which refers to a series of steps that an organisation uses to build solutions and provide a continual flow of value to their customers.

At the end of the day, the implementation and utilisation of SAFe is all about maximising the value that an organisation, team, and product or service brings to a customer, and making sure that all the steps that lead to these favourable outcomes are aligned and integrated with the organisation’s values and goals.
