Do you have a quickstart launch program to help adopt agile without an agile framework?

You can begin a transition to agility without an agile framework in mind. We call it a normative experience. We work with teams of teams, in conjunction with managers and leaders, to examine the value stream.

You can call it a value stream or a customer journey, whichever makes more sense for you, but we are trying to identify:

  • How does the customer get serviced throughout the entire value stream?
  • How do they get a working product, from production to delivery to after-sales support?
  • What are the steps involved from point A to point Z.

And so forth.

The purpose of the normative experience is to create a series of exercises for the leadership team so that they discover, for themselves, how work actually flows across the value stream.

There is often a disconnect between what executives and leadership teams think happens versus how work progresses through each stage of the production and value delivery streams.

  • What are the bottlenecks that crop up throughout the customer journey?
  • What are the criteria necessary for each piece of work to flow to the next phase?
  • How effectively and efficiently does work flow through the value stream.

And so forth.

This is augmented by exercises that examine things like:

  • What it feels like to work in the organization?
  • What are the common problems that frustrate individuals and teams?
  • What are the persistent, systemic impediments to progress throughout the organization?

So, our quickstart launch programs do require us to do a few things before commencing.

  • We need to understand the unique context of the organization.
  • We need to invest a little time understanding how work flows throughout the value stream.
  • We need to identify where problems are congregating and how they impact the organization
  • We need to devise the exercises that empower the leadership teams to discover those problems, and their relative impact, for themselves.

Providing a report or doing a multi-page write up will not achieve the same outcome.

In our experience, when leadership teams experience this for themselves, the experience is visceral, and we can quickly create and sustain change.

In the UK, we have a popular TV series called Undercover Boss, where the owner or executive actively works with the team to discover how things actually work, and what the systemic problems in the organization are. This is very similar to that.

It’s a great way to make learning visceral and gain buy-in from leadership teams to create the change that is necessary to improve the customer journey and employee satisfaction.
