Release Train Engineer vs Scrum Master

What’s the difference between the two roles?

When it comes to agile teams, specifically within the SAFe framework, two of the most important roles are the Release Train Engineer (RTE) and the Scrum Master. Although both roles are essential for successful agile projects, there are a few important differences between them.

The first, and perhaps the most obvious difference between the two roles is their scope of responsibility.

The primary focus of a Scrum Master is to facilitate the daily activities of the team by removing any impediments, helping team members adopt the Scrum framework, and ensuring that the team is staying on track.

On the other hand, the RTE is responsible for the overall coordination and delivery of a project across multiple teams. This includes managing the release schedule, overseeing the development process, and ensuring that all teams are working together and following the same process.

The second difference between the two roles is their level of technical knowledge. The Scrum Master is typically a more hands-on role, requiring a deep understanding of the product being developed as well as the Scrum framework. The RTE, on the other hand, can be more focused on the business side of things, requiring a broad understanding of the project and the business objectives.

There are two popular Scaled Agile (SAFe) courses catered to each role. To compare the two courses in detail to determine which is right for you, read our blog post here.
