How does SAFe compare to other agile frameworks?

SAFe, in my experience, is the only agile framework that focuses on business results.

So, it starts with understanding what the specific business objectives are, and then working to align the team of agile teams (agile release trains) with specific organizational and customer outcomes.

  • What do we want to achieve through the adoption of the SAFe framework?
  • What are the elements that most matter to our customers?
  • How do we create and capture value for the organization?

And so forth.

So, a SAFe consultant will work with the organization to align business strategy with product development execution, to achieve the customer objectives that matter.

In scrum, for example, there is a strong alignment between the product vision and the work that the product development team do, but there isn’t necessarily an alignment with a business objective or organizational strategy.

Kanban is similar. It is a great framework and can be incredibly helpful to create a pull-based work system for an agile product development team, but it doesn’t necessarily focus on aligning teams of agile teams with organizational and customer strategies.

There are other scaling frameworks, such as LeSS (Large Scale Scrum), that do have the capability for processes and systems to align with a customer objective or business strategy, but they don’t have the proven track record SAFe has in achieving that alignment.
