How does SAFe Handle Release Planning and Execution?

In SAFe, when we talk about Release Planning and Execution, we are referring to a calculated document that is used to capture and track the features that are planned for an upcoming release. So in essence, it is an internal working document for product and development teams whereby a number of solutions such as roadmapping software or a business model canvas are used. Agile release planning in particular is therefore where teams build and release products in iterations or incremental stages. And instead of releasing all at once, they are released into distinct major releases.

So in such a scenario, the tested software will be sitting in a staging environment, and once that software is approved by the business owners and project managers, it is deployed to the production system.

So releasing is a question of:

🚀 Making a decision that we want to make the software.

🚀 Ensuring that the software/product is working.

🚀 Implementing visibility of our production system to a group of customers.

🚀 Executing the organisation’s release strategy.

🚀 Establishing a release strategy and releasing incrementally.

So, how do we execute on the release?

The way I interpret that question is to ask “how do we get software or our solution ready to be released?” SAFe utilises an interactive and incremental approach, and so within every iteration, we have a software that is tested and aligned with our customers. We achieve this in every iteration by having a system demo that is incremented. This means that not only one team is working on the whole system but rather there are multiple teams within the Agile Release Train that have contributed to that solution.

So that’s how teams interactively and incrementally execute releases whilst using all the good practices of fair workingprogramming, as well as test and behaviour driven development.

Why Strategic Release Planning and Execution is Important

Regardless of which approach you take, in any business the top priority should always be quality rather than quantity. A valuable Agile release should therefore bring real value to customers such as new featuresbug fixes, or product efficiency.

Strategic and meaningful release planning and execution is therefore important because it:

🚀 Supports the overall product vision and roadmap.

🚀 Helps plan and divide product roadmap into manageable iterations.

🚀 Ensures that products align with customer expectations and needs.

🚀 Encourages teams to self-organise and collaborate.

In a world where change is the only constant, HR professionals are increasingly finding themselves at the heart of organizational transformations. The Agile HR course within the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) offers a unique opportunity for HR professionals to not only understand but also actively participate in driving these transformations.

The Role of HR in Transformation 🚀

HR professionals are already experts in their field, well-versed in delivering the core functions of human resources. However, the Agile HR course challenges them to think differently about their role. It encourages HR professionals to become key enablers of transformation—whether it’s an Agile transformation, a digital transformation, or any other significant organizational change.

Rather than standing on the sidelines, HR professionals who embrace Agile principles can become central players in these transformations, making Agile values and principles a core part of their everyday.

Why Agile HR is Important 🌟

The Agile HR course teaches HR professionals how to align their practices with the core values of Agile, such as transparency, visibility, and collaboration. Here’s why this alignment is crucial:

  • Transparency: Agile values transparency, but how can HR make this a reality? The course shows HR professionals how to build transparency into their policies and procedures, fostering a culture of openness and trust.
  • Visibility: In Agile, visibility is key to success. The course guides HR professionals on how to increase visibility in their processes, ensuring that everyone has access to the information they need to collaborate effectively.
  • Collaboration: Agile thrives on collaboration, and HR plays a pivotal role in enabling this. The course teaches how to embed collaboration into the very fabric of the HR function, from policy design to daily operations.

Moving Beyond the Side of Desk Activity 🎯

For many HR professionals, supporting Agile or digital transformations has often been treated as a “side of desk” activity—something that is done in addition to their regular duties. The Agile HR course turns this notion on its head. It positions the HR function as a central player in the transformation journey, making Agile principles the cornerstone of their work.

Who Should Attend? 🤔

The Agile HR course is perfect for:

  • HR Leaders: Seeking to elevate their role in organizational transformations and drive change from within.
  • HR Practitioners: Looking to integrate Agile values into their daily work, ensuring that HR policies and practices support the broader organizational goals.
  • Transformation Agents: HR professionals who want to move from the fringes to the forefront of transformation efforts, becoming key enablers of change.
