How can you define a system team in SAFe?

When we explore agile teams, or teams of agile teams, there may be certain capabilities that the team don’t possess which are necessary to deliver a working product or feature to the customer.

A good example of this would be an end-to-end testing environment requirement where the teams only have some testing capabilities, but not end-to-end-testing capabilities.

They can’t, for example, integrate all the other systems into the testing environment and so they can’t fully validate the work that they are doing.

So, the system team provides that full end-to-end capability or tooling set to ensure that teams or teams of agile teams can validate the work they are doing and deliver a working, valuable product or feature to the customer.

Based on the environment, or organizational context, that system team could be a short-term solution – they may be a temporary solution at a specific time – that or they could be a long-term, fully integrated solution in the organization.

In the short-term context, that system team may also be empowering the teams to develop their own internal capabilities or build their own tooling set with the objective of exiting once that has been achieved.

In the long-term context, that system team may also be a highly specialized team that the organization can not replicate or do without, and so they are a long-term solution that service one or more agile release trains within the value chain.
